Traditional Yard Sale Gourds

Walking in my neighborhood several blocks away along the same street, I have a flashback to 2007 where I would do things like move poorly parked motorcycles into half parking spots behind buses. I would think “he should be thankful”

A poster of four ships in port, all facing out. Isometric view and close-in cityscape. It feels familiar, though I can’t specify how. Analogized as a model for all posters with any four things receding into the distance, regarded as saccharine.

I’m inspecting merchandise in a small dead-end town, the end of a long road, during their annual event — a Bay Area tradition (like Port Costa’s town-wide yard sale). I inspect a standing fan and carefully consider it for our apartment. I take off its head from the bulky base stem and consider how to pack it on my motorcycle. I reconsider and try to put it back, though it’s fussy and I give up, chagrined.

I pick up a pair of binoculars laying on the table. They’re better and clearer than my pair at home. I can see across the narrow bay channel to Russia (it must be Russia — but where?) at the many people playing in the water. There’s one tough guy I can see walking toward me, wearing a fur hat, stomping around the waters with the many other Russians and Russian children. Because of the binoculars I get the impression he’s much closer, along with the feeling he could see me. I have to consciously overcome this sensation. I put the binoculars back.

At another table I notice some very distinctive drinking gourds, the kind you drink yerba mate out of. I recognize them from a quirky little stand in San Francisco that sits in a private park outside a fancy mall (maybe in SOMA). I recall, not long ago, walking through an under construction passageway under the awnings of that mall. I had made my way toward the side entrance, construction workers having put up another temporary fence corridor between the entrance and the stand — absent-mindedly blocking access from my passageway. I had righteously knocked over the fence, for its disregard of proper safety and egress practices. That was the last time I was near there.

Along with the Yerba Monte gourds from that stand, I see a distinctive collection of cheapo pocket pussies, also sold there and quite distinctive. I deduce (with a degree of certainty) that the shop must be closed now, and the locals selling at the yard sale must’ve been employed there. Hmm… vaguely disappointed and would appreciate more information on why and when the store closed.

I want to take a picture, check against some references, but there’s an update on my phone. The new interface is poorly designed, with sections labeled “not ok”… which I have to work out is actually a button, not a notification, and it’s meant to light up if something was indeed not ok. Terrible design. I have to restart my phone, and it’s a fucky process that takes much too long. By the time the phone is restarted, the table has been cleared off. There’s a musical performance happening after the yard sale, as is traditional. Typically I prefer to have left by then, what with the massive influx of cars parking for it. One of the locals is nearby setting up for the performance, and I ask him about the gourds and pocket pussies. He goes inside a building to see if he can holler at the guys and get them to help with my questions. But he also agrees that he wouldn’t want to be parked here still, with the coming onslaught.

No Such Thing As Free Brunch (Again)

In a class, viewing the Bay Area from above, but east to west. Much drier than before now that I can identify the isolated patches of tree life — much different than it’s Gold Rush era settlement. Along the California coast there’s a strip of Greek ruins, from another dream I’ve had (also with a theme of education).

During a long break in class, I’m playing music. Someone enamored of the strange patterns asks me what it is, and I answer that it’s a track I found called (approximately) “1912 Palm Desert Housewifes”. It’s like an updated waltz, related somehow to Rimsky-Korsakov or Stravinsky.

A topless older girl, perhaps early 40s, announces that class is about to resume and she’ll begin. I watch her as she walks over to a metal cabinet, like the one for my wife’s clothes in our bedroom, and I learn that it was free brunch this whole break. I lament how I wish they’d announce these things as I can never keep track.

Meanwhile, a fellow classmate sits on the lounging bed next to me facing away. Her skirt, more of a tiny belly-dancing wrap, has ridden up. She starts making out (or something even more intense), and I get to sit right behind her — even smell her. This seems prurient, as I’m really enjoying the proximity, but no one else seems to be aware that it’s something that could be sexual (or vicariously enjoyed).

Miami from above, underwater. Turquoise blue water. People swimming in warm ocean just off main road, near submerged palm tree and beach house.

Borrowed Lambo, Twin Mistake, Prime Distraction

My wife is on the phone. While I happen to be listening in, I hear a family member on the other side say very specifically “hey, your dad has lost his life”. I have an instantaneous reaction of FUCK, followed by (embarrassingly) a feeling that at least now things are closed. Maybe we can inherit something now, even. I bolt awake at 3:21 am.

I park a borrowed Lamborghini on the street outside a hotel on the waterfront of the bay. Perhaps I used to work there. It’s fancy and expensive, but the neighborhood next to it isn’t. I spend a good long time exploring inside during the uncrowded early morning golden hour — traversing interior suspended walkways, decorating for Christmas, and discovering a second-floor gender-neutral bathroom labeled “Theirs”. One curiosity I come across in this mall-like atrium-like space is a very amusing bird sculpture/toy, finding one cleverly hidden mechanism after another to press with my fingers.

In the back row of a wedding, in an upstairs conference room overlooking the bay, I run into my friend Meredith. I show her the nifty bird sculpture (now transformed into an owl) and offer it to her. I also mention that someone trusted me with the Lamborghini out front. But when I go outside again it’s not there. I orient with the nearby landmarks and the saved location on my phone, inspect around and find a note in hard-to-read scrawl — something about average monthly insurance for it being $1200, about “only 12 inches of cocaine” — the obvious implication being that the car will be returned if I pay them what they erroneously believe I actually pay.

Walking up an indeterminate slope, behind my college girlfriend Jenna & my actual wife, others, but for a moment I can’t remember who it was I married. Finally I do remember, and am thankful. I lay down next to my sleeping wife (now more like a long-ago redhead classmate of mine Lauren Wycoff, or the cartoon redhead hottie Jessica Rabbit) and as fond surprise snuggle behind her in bed, and we have sex. The dream actually proceeds through the whole experience: I lube up, it’s quiet and intimate, I finish inside. But for some reason my wife has never told me before that she has a twin! This is very embarrassing (for all of us) yet no one seems upset. Just a never-talk-about-it thing I suppose, although the twin seems… less upset than you’d expect. Perhaps a happy mistake.

A former British prime minister (like Theresa May), exchanging questions with a circle of Americans about things we’ve done. Tangential to her question — something she almost certainly didn’t bargain for — I tell a bizarre rambling story both fascinating and true (within the dream) of a town I visited in Oregon. Not finding our way in despite detailed instructions; driving past a graveyard to get in; discovering the winding dirt roadway between two other roads along a grassy and forested flat area. Picturesque clouds, children’s book sun, mountains in the distance; a rustic cabin near a pixie-haunted broadleaf tree; the wilderness beyond like a dewy lawn.

The next day I text the Prime Minister, having remembered the name of the place: Rasp, Oregon. While it does bear some resemblance to the town of Sisters, Oregon (which I visited this summer), I’m almost sure this was a place I’ve been before. It all may have come from another dream another night, one unwritten, remembered only in other dreams.
